The Irish Railway Clearing House (IRCH)developed a standard design of open goods wagon during WW1. The IRCH Standard Open Wagon was the standard Irish open wagon until the introduction by CIE of the Bulleid “Corrugated”open wagons during the mid-1950. The Standard Opens remained in regular service until the run-down of loose coupled wagon load goods traffic during the mid-1970s.

In CIE days the “Standard Opens” were used to carry BR A & B containers in addition to general merchandise and bulk traffic such as coal, gypsum and sugar beet.
